Impingement syndrome is a condition that affects more than 200,000 people per year in the United States, yet unless you have a medical professional examine your shoulder, you could be unsure what is causing pain every time you lift your arm or throw a ball. At Greater Austin Regenerative Medicine & Wellness, we can thoroughly examine your shoulder and test for impingement syndrome, and if that is found to be the cause of your pain, provide bone marrow aspiration and stem cell therapy to help your body begin to heal.
Understanding Impingement Syndrome
Impingement can occur following repetitive shoulder motions, such as throwing or swimming. The older you are, the higher the chances you will cause impingement the more you lift, reach, or throw. The pain occurs when you lift your arm to shoulder height and the space between the acromion (the bone on top of your shoulder) and the rotator cuff narrows. The rotator cuff is responsible for keeping your arm in the shoulder socket, and if you have inflamed cartilage, the acromion can rub on the rotator cuff, causing pain and limited mobility. If you’re an athlete, this can make it difficult to compete at a high level, or even complete common tasks like dressing before a game or showering afterwards.
If you have chronic shoulder pain that intensifies when you lift your arm above your head, you could be suffering from impingement syndrome.
